Outdoor rocking chairs
In their initial years after invention, rocking chairs were primarily used as garden furniture. People used them for spending lazy afternoons in their lawns. While rocking chairs soon made a transition to indoors as well, they never lost the charm of the soothing effect outdoors. So they maintained their special place among outdoor furniture, and can be seen adorning porches, gardens, patios and gazebos even today. The combination of the rocking motion of the chairs and the beauty of nature can have a therapeutic effect, washing away your stress and worries as you sit in them. And so the chairs become special; it’s not rare to get attached to an outdoor rocking chair.
As they sit in the open, outdoor rocking chairs must be made of materials that can withstand exposure to the extreme elements of nature – sun, rain, snow, etc. There is a lot of diversity in the materials in which outdoor rocking chairs are available. The classic – and most popular – choice is wood. Not only will you get beautiful designs in wood, but also add a more traditional feel to your home. Your choice can range from pine, cedar, cypress, and teak to mahogany, and oak, even wicker. These woods are all treated first to make them extra resistant to the weather. It may also be wise to add a sealant or finish, enhancing both the look and the durability of the chair. Besides wood, you can get outdoor rocking chairs in metals such as iron and aluminium – these are more durable – and in plastic – cheaper and easier to maintain.
Depending on the material your outdoor rocking chair is in, it will also require some care. You can clean these chairs by wiping with cloth dipped in soapy water. If you happen to spill something on it, you should clean it up right away, otherwise you will risk staining. If the rocking chair is made of wood, it will require refinishing once every few years. Otherwise it will slowly weather to a silvery grey colour. Quite a number of people actually prefer that look, so it depends on what you want.
